I began playing rock-n-roll music as a soundtrack to my yoga classes 20 years ago, long before any type of popular music was being used by the vast majority of yoga teachers. I remember at that time some of the teachers were starting to play “adult contemporary” music. I offended a few folks with the rock, but most found it cool. A common link in something that at that time was pretty uncommon.
I have been known to drop the occasional curse word, make people laugh, reference alcohol and drugs, (not condoning their use) and preach the occasional gospel of yoga.
On the surface of this one might think that I have disrespected the tradition, or am not a serious practitioner. Nothing could be further from the truth.
If anything I consider myself, at the core of it, to be a “fanatical purist” when it comes to yoga.
I am just doing what I feel is the most important thing I can do as a yoga teacher. I am trying to make people fall in love with yoga.
And to do that I rely on the same principles used for selling many other things. I want to make it real, accessible, and fun – because it is all those things, or not, depending on how it is presented.
Not everyone loves me. In fact, I have ruffled many feathers in the quest of delivering pure, uncompromising information. Some even say that people tend to “love or hate” me, and that is fine. Haters gonna hate.
But I know this much. I have given many people a love for physical yoga, and some a love of the spiritual path of yoga. I have given many people a SAFE, accessible practice that they can enjoy for a lifetime. In the end, giving people authentic yoga is ALL that I care about as a yoga teacher.
If a student isn’t ready for the message, that’s fine too. Then I am happy to “plant seeds” that hopefully sprout at a time in their life that is appropriate. Because I am not a great believer in totally random occurrences, I believe that there are reasons someone ends up in my class.
*I currently teach two classes per week and YogaWorks in Costa Mesa, California.
Some Testimonials
“You made me fall in love with yoga. It’s true. You have a gift and I have sincerely loved every minute of every one of your classes. Over the 6 years, I have not only become stronger and more agile, but also more aware and grateful. I have found an inner sanctuary when I practice which is priceless. Despite no longer getting the true pleasure of being one of your yogis, I will continue to practice and always be grateful for your guidance, humor, compassion, and of course, your music. Thank you for being an amazing yoga teacher and sharing your passion with me! I will miss you. With love, L.R. ……………..

“I’ve been going to your class on a regular basis for a number of years now…..there are not many things that I am able to do regularly, but your class has been one of them. You embody everything yoga-asana, proper alignment, philosophy, music, laughter, life experience, story telling, gratitude ,and most importantly fun! I always learn something new in each and every one of your classes Thank you for everything you have given and continue to give my practice. I know that I draw inspiration from your class-both on and off the mat. Namaste, D.B.” …………………
“…The best way I can finish my thoughts is in how I describe you to folks who don’t know you. It uses to be part time hippie, music-man, motorcycle rider who cuts actors hair for a living while dispensing sage and sometimes useless advice in a kick ass 90 minute yoga class. Now I just call you my friend. With that said, I always think about how we end every class. ‘Take a moments to feel gratitude for all your blessings, most importantly your health.’ Amen. Thanks Bro!” J.H. ……………………

I’ve been so inspired I’ve pursued a meditation practice and have been receiving lessons from Self-realization Fellowship. I take all 4 of his classes. I love the 90 minutes (although longer would be better!) …His students are as devoted as I am and I enjoy practicing with his students.” J. R. ……………………..
